Many scenes from the biography of the Buddha adorned the exterior of sacred sites in South Asia. Here, the Buddha, shown with the halo, appears to be returning to his hometown where he meets his father the king for the first time since his departure from the palace. A figure at the right, now broken, holds a flywhisk to indicate that the Buddha is the true spiritual sovereign.
