Spotted red sandstone is quarried near the city of Mathura, which was a major center of artistic production from the 2nd century BCE through the 12th century CE. Various types of birds, animals, and plants were selected to ornament the exterior of sacred monuments. They implicitly refer to the notions of abundance, prosperity, and the auspiciousness of life.
