These objects were found in a shipwreck located off the coast of central Vietnam near the port of Hoi An, part of a cargo once numbering 250,000 objects. The ship in which they sank was probably on its way back to Thailand, having loaded up this enormous shipment of Vietnamese ceramics. China had dominated the extensive trade in blue-and-white ware since the fourteenth century, but during an isolationist period in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Vietnam stepped in to capture parts of this lucrative export trade.
