The intricate royal turban on this bodhisattva sculpture incorporates motifs popular in both Central Asia and India, such as winged lions and crocodile-like creatures with jewels spilling from their mouths. Displacing a crest in the center of the crown is an inscription written in a southern Indian script, indicating the statue was made by a stone carver who had come from the south to meet the demand for artists in the Gandhara region.
