Opaque watercolor, gold, and ink on khoi paper with lacquered and gilt covers
The adventures of the Buddhist monk named Phra Malai emerged in popularity in Thailand during the late eighteenth century. This book tells of his travels to heaven and hell and was read aloud by monks to remind the faithful of the consequences of good and bad actions. Like other Thai Buddhist manuscripts of this period, this book was produced in the accordion format, each with seven pages illuminated by pairs of illustrations. The language is Thai, while the script is Cambodian and written in gold.
