Pensive seated woman
Iran, Isfahan, 20th century
Opaque watercolor and gold on paper

This painting is made in the style of works popular in the sixteenth and seventeenth century such as the image of two youths that is displayed nearby. Like that painting, this one depicts an idealized courtly figure with a moon-shaped face, elongated almond-shaped eyes, and curling locks that trace her cheeks, set against a background landscape executed in a delicate gold ink. However, this work was made by an artist who was active in Isfahan during the early twentieth century.
