The Khavarannama chronicles the military exploits of ‘Ali, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, and his partisans. It is one of several Persian epic poems that imitate the Shahnama (“Book of Kings”) by the poet Firdawsi. In this episode, ‘Ali’s companion Amr disguises himself as an elderly priest; when the army of his enemy Jamshid prostrate themselves in front of his idol, Amr is able to drug them and steal Jamshid’s treasure.
