Scribes and calligraphers were admired throughout the Islamic world, writing being central to the most fundamental aspects of Islam. Muhammad was asked by Allah through the angel Gabriel to write down the words of Allah, which formed the Koran. Allah himself is thought to have created the world through writing it with his divine pen.
The Koran is always written in Arabic, even if it was produced in non-Arabic speaking countries, such as Iran. The Koran also differs from other works of literature in that it is never illustrated with animal or figural images, but the text and especially the frontispiece were often lavishly embellished with intricate floral and geometric ornament.
