Lyric Visions
The conquest of the Persian empire by the Macedonian Greeks led by Alexander was the culmination of his campaigns in the East. Alexander had defeated the Persian emperor Dara, or Darius, in a series of epic battles and pursued Dara who had been set to flight. Two of Dara’s followers, seeing that the end was near, murdered Dara in the hopes of gaining favor with Alexander. However, when Alexander came to the side of the dying Dara, he asked Alexander to execute the traitors. Alexander is shown seated, honroing his wishes by overseeing their hanging. Above the image is a rhyming verse in Ottoman Turkish that reads:
Don't think that the traitor prospers;
Either his head is cut off or he is hanged on the gallows.
