Tastes in Asian Art Installation
The cultured elite of Safavid Iran took an interest in compiling albums of pictures that would not necessarily serve as accompaniments to a text. Albums frequently included paintings of individuals, such as this unnamed lady holding a book. Similar to the paintings of beauties by the Safavid court painter Reza Abbasi, this figure seems to float on the page, with sketchy allusions to an outdoor landscape setting around her.
As is typical of the Persian figural style, she is presented in three-quarter view, and her body is obscured beneath textiles ornamented with delicate arabesques painted in gold. The curving contour lines and minimally articulated drape of the skirt convey barely a hint of three-dimensional mass.

A princess in blue and orange
Iran; ca. 1575
Opaque watercolor on paper
In the mid-sixteenth century, albums combining calligraphy and paintings become popular among connoisseurs
of art. These albums frequently included paintings of fashionable individuals such as this unnamed lady. Similar to the paintings of youths by the Safavid court painter Riza Abbasi, this figure seems to float on the page, with sketchy allusions to an outdoor landscape setting around her. She holds a book open on her knee but the text seems barely able to hold her wandering thoughts.
