A prince and a dervish in a landscape
Iran, Isfahan; 20th century
Opaque watercolor and gold on paper
As part of the early twentieth century Qajar revival of arts and crafts from the Safavid period (1501–1722), drawings like this were made in imitation of seventeenth century images, and they often included false signatures, such the inscription on this page claiming it was made by the famous artist Riza Abbasi. Though immediately recognizable as being later, this work captures the spirit and masterful drawing style of Riza’s courtly figures.
