Asian Reinstallation
A royal figure sits enthroned on the rocks of the wilderness, his potency underscored by the presence of the tame lion behind him. A group of visitors from the city-a dome and mosque of which are visible behind the hills-come to bring him offerings. The manuscript from which this painting comes remains unknown, and appears to be unrelated to the text, which is a prose composition about the adventures of two friends.
The stylized rocks and figural forms are ultimately derived from Chinese landscape painting, though they are imbued with the bright, pastel color sensibilities popular among Persian painters.
