During much of his career, William Merritt Chase maintained an active studio in New York where he made his living painting still lifes and portraits of New York society. From 1891 to 1902, Chase spent the summer with his family in Shinnecock Hills, located on Long Island, not far from Southampton. Thanks to continued support of local patrons, Chase led a plein-air art school at Shinnecock, where he created many enduring images of the natural landscape. Although the ocean was close by, he was more interested in depicting the terrain of Shinnecock. The Chase Homestead celebrates the family’s summer home and his artist’s studio, designed by renowned architect Stanford White of New York.
