Flowers were among the most popular and commercially successful subjects depicted by the Rookwood decorating staff. Here, a South American orchid (phragmipendium) is rendered against a neutral ground that focuses our attention on the plant. Using an atomizer to apply colored slips, Valentien created a smooth transition from the dark, upper portion to the lighter area at the bottom.
Rookwood artists generally incised their initials on the underside, out of view. Valentien most likely considered this vase of special importance, since he is signed it on the lower side and included his full last name. Given its large scale and prominent signature, this work may have originally been intended for an exhibition.
