Born in Hannibal, Missouri, James Carroll Beckwith (1852–1917) became an accomplished portrait painter in New York, counting among his subjects William Merritt Chase (1849–1916) and Theodore Roosevelt (1901–1909). In J. Carroll Beckwith, Eakins portrays Beckwith in the act of painting, with a brush and palette in his hands, standing before a portrait of his wife, Bertha Beckwith, who was also an artist. On the back of the painting, Eakins wrote, “To Mrs. Carroll Beckwith from her friend Thomas Eakins, 1904.” This work, and the other painting by Eakins in this exhibition, Elizabeth with a Dog, demonstrates the artist’s sensitive portrayal of people in his life and his penchant for dark, Victorian interiors in Philadelphia, the city where he spent most of his life.
