Winter Road
Oil on canvas • 1912
After a career playing semi-professional baseball, George Bellows left Columbus, Ohio, and moved to New York City to pursue art. While he is best known for his social subjects that consistently avoided idealization, Bellows also painted landscapes, most notably the coast of Maine and the New Jersey Palisades. Bellows favored winter scenes and found snow to be particularly intriguing. He once declared, “I must paint the snow at least once a year.” The foreground of this painting emphasizes the fall of light on snow, in contrast to the long shadows.
