A Stag at Sharkey’s
Lithograph • 1917
This lithograph is based on Bellows’s famous 1909 painting Stag at Sharkeys which he painted at a time when staging public prizefights for a fee was illegal in New York. Fight promoters skirted the law by presenting bouts at private clubs such as the Sharkey Athletic Club, which was located across Broadway from Bellows’s studio. Bellows, who was an avid fan of boxing, visited the theme many times in both paintings and prints, allowing him to create dynamic compositions and explore his interest in depicting urban realism.
