Jawlensky was trained as an artist in Russia, but in 1896 he went to Munich, hoping to escape the limits that the Russian art establishment placed on modern painting styles. There, he met his fellow expatriate Vasily Kandinsky and began serious experimentation with color and form. In the first years of the new century, however, Jawlensky’s style was not yet close to that of the early Expressionists, but rather, retained the influence especially of Vincent Van Gogh, as is evident here. The canvas is one of a series that Jawlensky painted of the landscapes around the Bavarian town of Füssen, where he spent much of 1905.
