Sculptures such as this were made to be worshipped in a subsidiary shrine of a Buddhist temple. Identified by the figure of a Buddha in the crown, Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is seated in the posture of royal ease—a popular form in China since the 11th century. One step away from achieving complete enlightenment, bodhisattvas wear royal garments and jewelry in reference to the Buddha’s early life as a prince.
