Mountain, Meadow, Citadel: The Many Landscapes of Afghanistan
This page from a manuscript of Firdawsi’s epic on the Persian kings was produced in Herat, a city in western Afghanistan that flourished in the fifteenth century under the Timurid rulers of Iran and Central Asia. The painting depicts Isfandiyar, son of the Iranian king Gushtasp, taken prisoner at the order of his own father, who wrongly suspects Isfandiyar of plotting to seize the throne. Isfandiyar, here mounted on an elephant and wearing a simple white robe with hands bound, would later be released when his regretful father—shown enthroned in a blue robe and golden crown—required his aid in battle.
