One of the leading painters of 15th-century Siena, Giovanni di Paolo forged one of the most recognizably individual styles of any Renaissance artist. Adopting the stylization of the International Gothic rather than the naturalism more commonly found in paintings of the time, he turned away from conventional standards of beauty and created ethereal, unworldly images, especially in late works like this panel. It is painted in Giovanni’s typically limited range of colors. His treatment of subject matter, moreover, was as original as his style. Most 15th-century images of the Virgin and Christ Child emphasize the domestic, intimate interaction of the mother and child, but this composition presents instead a visionary scene, with the Virgin Mary shown in adoration of a Christ Child held by angels.
