Bugiardini was among Michelangelo’s most loyal friends, having trained with him in Florence early in his artistic career. For many years, this unsigned tondo – the Italian word for round panel paintings – was believed to be by Piero di Cosimo, another Florentine painter. However, the sharp profiles and fleshy anatomy of the figures recently led to a more convincing attribution to Bugiardini.
As Florence’s patron saint, John the Baptist was a symbol of civic pride among the Florentine nobility, not unlike the Old Testament hero, David. The
tondo format was particularly popular in the decoration of the great urban palaces of ruling families.
