The gesture performed by this Buddha, both arms bent, palms facing outward, is common only in Southeast Asia. The gesture is termed “Calming the Ocean,” the ocean being a metaphor for the flow of thoughts and emotions that are stilled in the practice of meditation as taught by the Buddha. Sculptures of this particular type were very popular royal commissions in Thailand in the nineteenth century, and often there is space in the crown to hold the relics of a deceased relative.
