Interior with Seated Woman
Oil on panel
ca. 1660

While little is known of the artist’s life, Jacobus Vrel’s interior and courtyard scenes of the 1650s are mysterious forerunners to the famous Delft works by Johannes Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch. The date of Vrel’s earliest known painting, 1654, coincided with the massive gunpowder store explosion that destroyed most of the city of Delft. --MAB 2021
