Vajravarahi is a female Buddha, one who has achieved enlightenment. Nonetheless she appears a rather fearsome creature who holds the accoutrements of the chopper, skull bowl, and a staff topped with three heads in varying stages of decay. A being of delusion is crushed underfoot, and her garland of grinning skulls refers to her conquest over the ego. The two attributes of her name can also be found in the image—a vajra, or thunderbolt, and the varahi, or sow, symbolizing delusion.
