Eastman Johnson created intimate scenes of daily life that contributed greatly to an understanding of the American cultural landscape in the nineteenth century. Born in Lovell, Maine, Johnson lived mostly in New England, and this painting was inspired by summers that he spent in his home state. Around the time that this work was painted, he created several works that portrayed the innocence and playful nature of his nieces, nephews, and their young friends. Moreover, although he does not represent African Americans in this work, he is universally recognized as one of the first mainstream American painters to portray the lives of African Americans on a regular basis.
