O’Keeffe often demonstrated sensitivity to the aesthetics of a locale, bringing to her work a sense of local mood and atmosphere that persisted even as she exhibited an economy of detail and a propensity for flat geometric forms. Barns were a frequent motif in her work, and Barn with Snow was inspired by her time in Lake George. Born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, O’Keeffe spent her formative years in a modest rural environment in relative isolation. The barns in Lake George and also those located in the Gaspé region of Canada connected her to her past, but it was their formal qualities, their history, and their connection to the land that inspired her. The emphasis on geometric planes in Barn with Snow reoccurs later in her approach to architecture in New Mexico. There was a simplicity to both the barns and the adobe homes of the Southwest that resonated with her rejection of ornate detail.

In her many landscape paintings, Georgia O’Keeffe demon- strated sensitivity to capturing the aesthetics of place—a sense of local mood and atmosphere that persisted even as she tended to an economy of details and a propensity for flat geometric forms. In New York City, for example, she struggled with the urban setting, but she created a masterful abstract response to the growing presence of skyscrapers. In New Mexico she gleaned inspiration from the desert terrain and adobe architecture. Barns were a frequent motif in O’Keeffe’s work, and Barn with Snow was inspired by the artist’s 1932 trip to the Gaspé region of Canada, where she noted that the “beautiful barns…looked old, as if they belonged to the land, while the houses looked like bad accidents.”
