Otto and Gertrud Natzler met in 1933 and began a lifelong collaboration in ceramics.
From the beginning, Gertrud was responsible for throwing the pots, while Otto glazed them. In 1938, the political situation in their native Austria forced them to immigrate to the United States where they settled in Los Angeles. Two years later, the Fine Arts Gallery (SDMA's original name) became the first museum to give the Natzlers a solo exhibition. Additional shows of their work were held at the Museum in 1942 and 1947.
Simple, elegant forms with classical profiles characterize the Natzlers's vessels. Their pots are thin-walled and free of artificial ornament. Otto devised a variety of glazes that included matte and glossy finishes with textures that ranged from smooth to coarse, lava-like surfaces.
