Taste of Asia Rotation
This bodhisattva formed part of a group of Buddhist sculptures carved from the living rock of a man-made
cave temple. The damaged hands are pressed together
in a gesture of adoration in honor of a Buddha.

Traces of original polychrome pigment on the surface of the stone convey a sense of the brightly colored cave temples at Tianlong Shan. The swaying posture and gracefully draped garments are characteristic of sculptures of the Tang dynasty, considered to be one of the high classical moments in the history of Chinese art.
