Adriaen Collaert was probably trained in the workshop of the Galle family of engravers in Antwerp and, unlike most of the artists in this exhibition, never entered the circle of Goltzius and his associates in Haarlem. Collaert was nonetheless prolific and successful and produced over 600 prints. Many of those prints were in series, and the Landscape with Exotic Animals, although rare and not well catalogued, seems to relate to a group of animal prints. Depicting various monkeys and what seems to be a lion, the work attempts to document non-European animals that Collaert is unlikely actually to have seen. The work reflects the interest in natural history that accompanied the great age of global exploration in the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as the Mannerist taste for all things exotic.
