“‘Did you suppose, my fatherthat I could tear myself away and leave you?Unthinkable…”
So begins Virgil’s epic poem, The Aeneid, which follows the hero Aeneas, who fled Troy as it fell to the Greeks in order to protect his family. Troy with his family and other refugees to Italy,where his family founds Rome. This scenedepicts Aeneas retreating from battle in order to protect his family. The hero is depicted in a yellow tunic and a feathered silver helmet, helping his elderly father, Anchises, from his chair. His wife, Creusa, is to the left, holding household deities of Troy, Lares and Penates, for they would have been considered as their most valuable possessions. Aeneas’ son, Ascanius, is behind his grandfather. Unfortunately, Creusa dies before being able to escape the city.
Simon Vouet enjoyed much success as a painter and decorator; he is regarded as one of the most influential painters of the 17th century due to his incorporation of Italian art style, such as the venetian influence evident in the soft and vibrant colors of the garments worn by Aeneas and his family, and the French academic classical style made famous by Nicholas Poussin. --MAB 2015
