By the year 1910, Jawlensky had moved away from the post-Impressionist, Van Gogh-inspired style of his earlier work and developed a new manner of flattened forms and bright colors. This was partly due to his interest in French Fauvists like Matisse but was especially fostered by Jawlensky’s ties to Kandinsky and Münter, with whom he was then closely associated. The resulting paintings, showing figures in raw, even strident passages of color, are among his most powerful work. Red Blossom is one of a group of paintings from 1910 that depict women wearing hats, carrying flowers or fans, often against strong red or orange backgrounds. A few years earlier, Jawlensky had written, “Apples, trees, human faces are for me only suggestions to see something else in them—the life of color, seized with a lover’s passion.”
