Closely related to the fanciful early landscape paintings by her teacher and companion Vassily Kandinsky, Münter’s Farmhouses has the bright color tones, compressed space, and naïve imagery associated with German Expressionism and the Blaue Reiter (“Blue Rider”) artistic movement. While sharing Kandinsky’s interest in the spiritual function of art, Münter adopted Kandinsky’s abstraction only to a limited degree. In the 1910s, Münter had solo exhibitions across Germany, but she was branded as a radical, degenerate artist during the Nazi era. Retiring to a house in the lake district of Bavaria, Münter continued producing landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and interior scenes in the highly stylized manner that she had developed early in her career.
