Although associated primarily with chaotic scenes of post-war Berlin, Beckmann lived in Frankfurt from 1917. This painting depicts a view of the River Main, and the Dreikonigskirche (Three Kings Church), which the artist regularly viewed as he returned to the city from his studio every evening. In 1937, on the day that many of his paintings were included in the infamous “Degenerate Art” exhibition, Beckmann escaped Nazi Germany for Amsterdam, and managed to immigrate to the United States in 1947, where he taught in St. Louis and New York.

Although forever associated with scenes of postwar Berlin, Beckmann lived in Frankfurt from 1917 onward, and this is one of his many views of that city. It shows the River Main, with the Dreikönigskirche (the Three Kings Church) in the background and the Iron Footbridge at left. The view is one that Beckmann saw as he returned to the city from his studio every evening. Many of his landscapes from this period were painted over a period of days, but he worked on the Moon Landscape for three months, from August to October of 1925, trying to perfect the darkness of the moonlit sky.
