Khatemkari is a painstaking method of creating inlaid objects. Several types of wood, along with metal and bone, are cut into minute beads and then assembled into geometric patterns; it can take over six hundred individual pieces to create one square inch of inlaid surface. On this box, elegant writing further augments the decoration. The central panel on the lid bears the common phrase, “Grace is from God and Victory is near” (a quotation from the Quran), while the other verses extoll the skill of the craftsman who made the box.
