The small size indicates that these shields were intended to be ceremonial bucklers for children. Complex, symmetrical floral motifs and vegetal scrolls in precious metals radiate from the center of the shield, invoking the popular Persian imagery of the sunburst (shamsa), which is associated with divine light.
Four bosses serve as studs that fix the straps on the underside of this type of shield. One of these shields still retains the original velvet padding with short loops fitted for a small hand.
