This trunk was made to hold Buddhist manuscripts and ritual objects, and the decoration on it was intended to match the sanctity of those contents. The jewels surrounded by golden flames at the center of the box, for instance, represent the wisdom of the Buddha burning away ignorance. They are venerated by two kinnaras, half-bird, half-human beasts that populate the heavens.
