Charles Fries studied with Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy. After working in New York and travelling in Europe, Fries moved to California, and was deeply inspired by the local landscape. He initially lived in San Juan Capistrano, where he stayed in the mission, and eventually settled in San Diego in 1897. Desert from Vallecitos Point, Laguna Mountain Resort demonstrates the artist’s interest in combining softer pastel hues with rapid brushwork.

Charles Fries studied with artist Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy. After working in New York and studying in Europe, Fries moved to California, where he became inspired by the region’s topography. Fries first moved to San Juan Capistrano, where he stayed in the town’s mission building for a period of time, but he eventually settled with his family in San Diego in 1897. Desert from Vallecitos Point, Laguna Mountain Resort demonstrates the artist’s interest in pastel hues and the influence of Impressionism. The painting is inspired by the Laguna Mountains in the Cleveland National Forest, located in the eastern portion of San Diego County. In 1935, at eighty years of age, Fries began to write his memoirs entitled, Memories I have heard, seen, suffered and enjoyed.

Born in Ohio, Fries apprenticed as a lithographer before studying at the Cincinnati Art Academy, one of the leading art schools in the United States at the time. After achieving success as an illustrator and portrait painter in New York, Fries moved to Southern California in 1896 and settled in San Diego the following year. He devoted himself to capturing the natural beauty of the area’s mountains and deserts with their subtle tones revealed by bright natural sunlight. Fries, dubbed the 'Dean of San Diego Painters,' was an influential force in the artistic life of the region as a teacher and a founding member of the San Diego Art Guild in 1915 and San Diego Contemporary Artists in 1929.
