Ammi Phillips was a self-taught painter noted for his portraits of people who were predominately from a small geographic area, namely the Western region where Massachusetts, Connecticut, and parts of New York meet. He traveled with his family to different towns and often settled in one place for a year or two, painting the portraits of local individuals. His paintings, which he successfully created for over fifty years, satisfied the growing interest among the emerging merchant and middle classes for portraiture. Phillips is widely recognized for the distinctive flattened forms of his figures, while adhering to an attention to detail as exemplified by the rendering of the delicate headdress of Abigail Penoyer Reynolds (1794-ca.1863). The adjacent painting by Phillips depicts Reynolds’ husband, George Greenwood Reynolds (1788-1872).
