Label Copy

An itinerant, self-taught painter, Ammi Phillips worked in rural communities in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York for more than fifty years. George Greenwood Reynolds (1788–1873), the subject represented here, was born in Bristol, Rhode Island, and later settled in South Amenia, New York, where this portrait was painted. Phillips portrayed Reynolds holding a copy of the Intelligencer, a newspaper associated with the Whig Party and represented by the artist on several occasions. Hanging next to this painting, is a portrait of the subject’s wife, Abigail Penoyer Reynolds. Phillips did not always sign his paintings, which makes the portrait of Abigail, with a signature and the date written in the upper left of the painting, distinctive among his works.
