Masters of Photography: The Garner Collection, November 14, 2020

Color photography, associated with the realm of advertising, sensational journalism, and amateur snapshots, has historically courted controversy among photographers and critics. Ansel Adams and Henri Cartier-Bresson, for example, found color to be too garish and distracting from the elegance of line and form and the subtle nuances of light and shadow. Countering this notion, Meyerowitz’s refined compositions are prime examples of the camera’s capacity to share the vibrancy and delicacy of a world in color.
