This composition was created on the verso of another painting (pictured below), the same year the artist was expelled from Die Brucke (The Bridge) for submitting paintings to the Berlin Secession, against their group-only policy. Shortly afterward Pechstein, inspired by Oceanic art, made a trip to the South Pacific islands of Palau, only to be interned there by Japan at the outbreak of World War I. Returned to Germany in 1915, he was drafted and sent to the Battle of the Somme, where more than one million lives were lost.
