Widely considered to be one of the masterpieces of Hiroshige’s large-scale Tokaido series, this print evocatively depicts travelers contending with a summer downpour in which the rain falls in sheets. The bending of the trees and the speed with which the villager, cloaked in a woven straw raincoat, tears down the slope to get out of the rain, give a sense of its force and unpleasant conditions. Nevertheless—indicating the artist’s sympathy for the working classes—the rider in the palanquin forces his bearers to continue uphill; only his clenched fist is visible under the protective yellow cover. The publisher’s name and the series title are on the umbrella.
