A full generation older than most of the other Expressionists, Rohlfs had a traditional artistic training and worked through a series of styles—academic, naturalist, Impressionist, and Neo-Impressionist—before finally turning to an Expressionist style after exposure to the works of Munch, Nolde, and Van Gogh. The thick, choppy strokes of paint in this canvas are obviously related to Van Gogh’s painting style, although the interest in the nude, the tightly cropped composition, and the bright color palette reveal Rohlfs’s interest in his younger German contemporaries.
