As early as the tenth century, stones with colorations that resemble landscapes were a favorite item to frame. The fact that the imagery evoking mountains, mists, and forests was naturally occurring seemed to suggest that qi itself—the life force of nature—was the artist and that the connoisseur/owner captured a piece of this mystical work in his own room.
