At a certain level, this canvas seems a fairly traditional image of female nudes at water’s edge, and the poses—especially of the central and right figures—recall those of nymphs in many a mythological scene. The woman at the left seems, however, to be drying herself after emerging from the water, and her hair is gathered atop her head more in the manner of the modern bather than the arcadian nymph. Furthermore, the juxtaposition of the notably thin woman at the left and the rather more plump figure at the right suggest that Hofer is offering us something other than another in the long line of pictures of idealized, classical nudes. The work was probably made during Hofer’s time in Paris, during which period he was greatly influenced by Cézanne’s paintings.
