Wearing only shoes and rolled-down stockings and sporting a modern haircut and highly rouged cheeks, the fan-carrying woman in this painting is a world away from the idealized nude. The canvas depicts Betty, a dancer at a nude review who also served as Tappert’s model. She and Tappert had a close relationship around 1910, and she inspired the artist to paint a series of boldly erotic works. Less well known today than some of his contemporaries, Tappert nonetheless played a key role in fostering the work of Expressionists. A member of Die Brücke, Tappert helped found the Neue Sezession in Berlin, where the artists of Die Brücke and the Blaue Reiter first exhibited together.
