In this image the artist vividly captures the diverse social
strata of Mexican society as well as the architectural splendor
of Mexico City’s Zócalo. The Sagrario chapel, adjacent to the
Catedral Metropolitana, is a quintessential example of an
extravagant Baroque style known as Mexican Churrigueresque
that was heavily influenced by the unique ornamentation
associated with Spanish Baroque architecture. This type of
ornate architecture was widespread throughout the new
Republic. Although working within a neoclassical tradition,
Nebel renders the urban environment of Mexico
City as a true observer. He captures in minute detail
the remarkable grandeur, liveliness, and fortitude of the new
Mexican Republic.
