Although Mount Fuji is framed by the strings of a kite, workmen fixing the roof of the Mitsui drapery shop in the heart of Edo’s shopping district are the focus in this print. In his unique depictions of working-class people, the artist blends affectionate humor with a sense of awe for their skill and diligence under treacherous and difficult conditions.
