Peasant women carrying rakes and shouldering baskets—probably filled with mushrooms—tread along a winding path through the mountains in autumn. Two pause to listen to the far cry of a stag on a distant mountain crest. Hokusai cleverly arranged his composition so that the deer are the central focus despite their diminutive size.
The poem about the lonely stag’s love-sick cry was written by a commoner, who himself dwelt in the mountains near Kyoto.
